An artist, she completed a master’s degree in interactive media from the Goldsmiths College at the University of London, in the United Kingdom, 2010. She develops collective art production strategies, working primarily with performance, installation and workshops. Her work covers a variety of issues relating to folklore, tradition, identity, memory, and non-linear narratives, often using interactive devices. Her work has been featured in exhibitions such as the 16th International Media Art Biennale WRO in Wroclaw, Poland (2015); the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria (2014); the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, Greece (2013); the Piksel in Bergen, Norway (2012); the Amber Festival in Istanbul, Turkey (2012); and others. Maria Varela lives and works in Athens.
