Chelpa Ferro is a multimedia group formed by the artists Luiz Zerbini, Barrão and Sérgio Mekler. The group explores the plastic characteristics of sound and the silence of sound sources. They first got together in 1995, when they had another member: musician Chico Neves. Throughout its history, the group has presented works in various formats: objects and sound installations, videos, stage presentations and albums in which the research on acoustic and electronic sources (which included the building of machines and sound mechanisms and the unconventional use of musical instruments) has played a crucial role, together with image composition, in the experimentation of different ways to organize its improvisations. Chelpa Ferro has participated in individual and collective exhibitions, such as Chelpa Ferro: Visual Sound, Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield (2011); e Acusma, SESC Paulista, São Paulo (2009) (simultaneous to the launch of the documentary Chelpa Ferro, which is part of the series Videobrasil Authors Collection); Panorama da Arte Brasileira, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (2001 and 2007); 51st Venice Biennale, Italy (2005); 25th and 26th São Paulo Biennial (2002 and 2004); among other exhibits and concerts. The group was nominated for the Nam June Paik Award, Dusseldorf, Germany (2011). The group is based in Rio de Janeiro.
