“Torn” asks the viewer to consider the discourse of social power and how it forms peripheral communities, emphasizing specific experiences of trans women in Turkey. The video features Didem, a trans prostitute who faces the camera in a vulnerable yet strong position: – shoulders forward, arms behind her back and permanent eye contact with the viewer. While a persistent noise sounds like a technical flaw, the zooming camera creates intimacy through observation and detail. A neck scar seems to remind us that, unprotected and often harassed by the police, women like Didem face extreme threats of violence every day.
