Videobrasil programs based on Southern Panoramas show debut
The 18th edition of the Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil will feature, starting on 12/16, three programs from the series Videobrasil on TV (shown on Sesc TV), based on the Southern Panoramas show of the Festival’s ongoing edition. The series debuted in 11/18, and four programs marking Videobrasil’s 30th anniversary have aired since.
On 12/16, the program “Southern Panoramas: nature and space, reconfigurations of sight” will air, addressing the different ways artists articulate the notion of space, and exploring issues such as nature, urban spaces, architecture, mobility, and the ties of belonging.
The program features interviews with some of the Southern Panoramas show winners, like Bakary Diallo, from Mali, who has won an artist residency in Salvador for his piece Tomo; Caetano Dias, awarded an honorable mention for Rabeca; and Sherman Ong, from Malaysia, who has also won an honorable mention for Motherland.
On 12/23, the program “Southern Panoramas: memory, identity and politics” will focus on works that explore the relationship between memory, identity, sexuality, and the tension between local and global. The program will feature the residency-winning artists Nurit Sharett, from Israel, director of the film The sun glows over the mountains, who has won the China Art Foundation prize and will undertake her residency at China’s Red Gate Gallery; Ali Cherri, from Lebanon, who won the Res Artis prize at the A-I-R Laboratory, in Poland, for his Pipe Dreams, and Brazil’s Virgínia de Medeiros, winner of the ICCo prize at Residency Unlimited in New York, for her piece Sérgio e Simone.
The program closes on 12/30 with a screening of the program “Southern Panoramas: contemporary collective imaginations” on SescTV. The final program in the series features artists whose strategy is to appropriate and resignify media elements, rethinking our subjectivation processes by conversing with mass communication and social media. The program will feature artists such as Argentina’s Federico Lamas, who will present his work Censorship universal language; Israel’s Orit Ben-Shitrit, director of the film Vive le capital (2012); Brazil’s Michel Zózimo, presenting his Atração dos sólidos, from the Fluxorama series (2012/2013); and Ezra Wube, from Ethiopia, presenting Wenzu (2011).
Videobrasil on TV
The series debuted on 11/18 with the program “Independent production: television and political opening,” about the issues that prompted the creation of the Festival, such as the need to publicize early independent video productions, the end of the military dictatorship regime in Brazil, and the country’s political opening process. The second program, “Video: languages, technologies and new possibilities”, gave an overview of Brazil’s 1980s video scene. “The programs Internationalization: views of the South” (12/2) explores the Festival’s internationalization process and the choice of the geopolitical South to be its structural axis, and “Expanded circuits” focuses on the Festival’s embracing of different languages , conversing with both the visual arts and cinema (12/9).
