Until November 16, 2014, Associação Cultural Videobrasil is accepting submissions of artworks and projects for artwork production, under two separate open calls for the 19^th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil | Southern Panoramas exhibition.

For the first time ever, the Festival is selecting four projects to receive up to R$ 30,000 each and be overseen by members of the Board of Curators leading up to their presentation at the Festival. Artists from the Festival’s target area, the global South, are eligible to submit up to three (03) artworks and one (01) project, in any of the contemporary art media and languages (including but not limited to photography, painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, sound art, video, performance and installation). The selected artworks will compete for a Grand Prize of R$ 75,000 and nine Artist Residency Prizes to be undertaken at Associação’s partner organizations. The 19^th edition of the Festival will take place from October 6^th to December 6^th, 2015 at Sesc Pompeia (in São Paulo).

The Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil | Southern Panoramas exhibition has become established as a platform for publicizing, fostering and reflecting about art productions from the global South, comprising countries that must seek out novel ways to promote artwork circulation and visibility on the global scene (check out the list of countries covered). Held biennially, the Festival features exhibitions, film screenings, performances, artist residencies, public programs meetings and activities, educational actions and publication launches, and brings together artists, curators, researchers, critics, journalists and delegates from contemporary art and culture organizations to reflect about Southern artistic output. The Festival also makes its shortlisted artworks public via online research platforms, books, websites, Videobrasil’s social media outlets, and in self- produced documentaries and TV shows.

In the 19^th edition, the South and its myriad issues will be the overarching theme of the Festival’s curatorial sections and programming, rather than simply of its competitive show. These issues – which somehow provide the inspiration and parameters for the selection of artworks and projects to participate in the Festival – concern diasporas, hybrid identities, migration flows and travels, personal narratives, memories, isolation, the social fabric and insularity. To add to this proposal, in addition to the artworks and projects selected via open calls, the 19^th Festival will feature works by guest artists who remain widely unknown on a global level, despite their landmark careers in the Southern scene. The triangulation between Africa, the Caribbean and South America lies at the core of the event’s reflections.
