Crossings and passages: the unequal accumulation of time
On February 24, at 6:30pm, Videobrasil is set to exhibit a cross-section of its collection in Cape Town, South Africa. The video program will be part of the show Crossings and passages: the unequal accumulation of time, curated by Bernardo de Souza, itself a part of the exhibition The Poetry In Between: South-South, to be held by the Goodman Gallery across different localities.
The Poetry In Between: South-South discusses the myriad connections between Brazil and South Africa, in keeping with the geopolitical South's discourse. Besides historical ties relating to slavery, several commonalities between Brazil and Africa have been noticed in more recent times, such as their political achievements, development flows, and the ostracizing of certain communities.
For Crossings and passages: the unequal accumulation of time, 19th Festival's Curatorial Committee member Bernardo de Souza has picked three recent works from Associação’s collection: Sergio e Simone (2010), by Virgínia de Medeiros, deals with the contrasts of Salvador’s urban settings as it portrays an individual with two identities: Simone, the orisha-worshipping transvestite, becomes the evangelical pastor Sergio. The video won Virginia de Medeiros a two-month stay at New York’s Residency Unlimited under the Artist Residency Prize. The filmmakers Karim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes are featured with the “documentary-daydream” Sertão de acrílico azul piscina (2004), a depiction of habits at once primitive and contemporary in several states in Northeast Brazil. For its part, Cinthia Marcelle’s Cruzada video raises issues relating to sociocultural conflicts by resorting to performance, painting, video art, and sound art.
The video programs are one of the strategies designed to keep Associação Cultural Videobrasil’s collection active and in touch with the world, by offering fresh perspectives on its artworks as they relate to contemporary art production.
