Artists convene for Reading of Portfolios at Galpão VB
On November 4 and 5 (Wednesday and Thursday), 1pm, at Galpão VB, the artists Clara Ianni, Débora Bolsoni, Felipe Bittencourt and Rodolpho Parigi, featured in the selected artworks exhibition of the 19th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil | Southern Panoramas, will meet with artists who entered works via email between October 6 and 23 to participate in the Reading of Portfolios. Open to the general public, the Reading of Portfolios is a uniquely educational opportunity, allowing access to the research lines and strategies of each of these artists. To attend, collect your ticket at the venue one hour prior to the event.
The pieces by Clara Ianni and Débora Bolsoni featured in the 19th Festival deal with two icons of modernism and modernity. In Forma Livre (2013, video), Ianni addresses the construction of the city of Brasília and the discrepancy between the discourse and practice of its architects Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, in view of the poor working conditions and repression that culminated in the death of construction workers (known as candangos). The artist is also featured with a series of drawings that approach the definition of cartographic lines on maps as a political event. Clara Ianni was one of the artists who won Residency Prizes in the 19th Festival, and will spend two months at the A-I-R Laboratory in Warsaw, Poland. Débora Bolsoni’s Topos_somedrama (2015, sculpture), in its turn, references the Monument to the Third International, which was conceived by Russian artist/architect Vladimir Tatlin — the piece was never completed due to its monumentality and, later on, to Josef Stalin’s crackdown on avant-garde art.
The pieces by Felipe Bittencourt and Rodolpho Parigi explore the performance field. Over the course of an year, Bittencourt, whose primary artistic language is performance, worked daily on a new project involving drawings and instructions for implementation, which resulted in Performance Diária (2011, installation), featured in the ongoing edition of the Festival. Parigi plays his iconoclastic female alter ego Fancy Violence, who, in the 19th Festival performance Fancy em Pyetà, segundo ato (2015, performance), annihilates the traditional image of the Virgin Mary cradling Jesus Christ and deals with gender performativity. Parigi will enact his performance again on November 25, 9:30pm at Sesc Pompeia’s Convivência area, where the pieces by Ianni, Bolsoni and Bittencourt are also on display.
About the artists: Clara Ianni (Brazil) is a visual artist with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of São Paulo, 2010, and a master’s in Visual and Media Anthropology from Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany, 2013. Débora Bolsoni (Brazil) is a visual artist with a master’s degree in Visual Poetics from the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo, 2014. Felipe Bittencourt (Brazil) is an actor and visual artist with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Centro Universitário Belas Artes in São Paulo, 2007, and a major in Photography from Escola Panamericana de Arte e Design, 2010. Rodolpho Parigi (Brazil) is a visual artist holding a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from FAAP, São Paulo. He works with drawing, painting, installation and performance.
