From March to May, a laboratory organized by the curator Sabrina Moura will consider curatorship beyond the exhibition space, transposing it into the fields of discourse and publishing, and exploring art creation spaces

“I envision curatorship as a way of thinking about interconnections: connecting objects, images, processes, people, places, stories and discourses in the physical space, like an active catalyst,” says curator Maria Lind.

Today, the curator’s work expands beyond the exhibition space and into myriad areas of culture.  From field work with artists to the editing of publications, from the building of collections to the creation of educational programs, the boundaries of curatorial practice expand into experimental formats.

The curatorial laboratory Thinking Beyond the Exhibition: Public Programs, Editorial Projects and Experimental Practices will discuss historical aspects of the field of curatorship, with case studies and workshops where practical projects will be created around each of the laboratory’s three modules — public programs, editorial projects and experimental practices.

In direct dialogue with Videobrasil’s Collection, its research tools (Video Library, Channel VB and PLATFORM:VB) and with the Galpão VB program, the laboratory will feature special appearances from some of the artists who participate in the Videobrasil program in the first half of 2016.

PROGRAM
Module 1 | Public Programs
March 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2016, from 8pm to 10:30pm

The first section of the laboratory sets out to investigate the connections between public programs and the art field. What are the potential interactions between the artwork and the public sphere? How can one bring questions of art into the field of discourse without resorting to reductionist formats? These issues will be explored in depth by looking into a series of public programs, traditional and/or experimental public program models at museums and biennials. The module will conclude with the group conceiving and presenting a public meeting at Galpão VB.

Module 2 | Editorial Projects
April 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2016, from 8pm to 10:30pm

The second section of the laboratory proposes a cross-cuting view of independent editorial initiatives and the field of artistic and curatorial practice. Here, a set of projects focusing on multiplicity, flux and serial circulation will be tackled, based on proposals brought in by the participants. The discussions will cover not only contents, but also spaces for circulation and dissemination of works. The final goal is the development and execution of an editorial project (book, magazine or any other print format) conceived collectively by the participants.

Module 3 | Experimental Practices
May 4, 11, 18 and 25, 2016, from 8pm to 10:30pm

In the third section of the laboratory, the notion of “experimentation” is taken as a starting point from which to investigate curatorial practices that connect the exhibition space with the artist’s creative spaces and vice versa. Art production and exhibition forms will be covered, including residency programs, process-based exhibitions, creative laboratories and other hybrid spaces. At the end of the module, the group will conceive and present an actual project at the Galpão VB.
