Next Saturday, April 16, at 3pm, Karol Radziszewski (Poland) introduces Kisieland (30', 2012) at Galpão VB. The documentary presents Radziszewski's meeting with Ryszard Kisiel, the founder of Filo, the first-ever Communist Poland gay-zine. The backdrop of the film is Kisiel's hitherto hidden archive, consisting of dozens of photos taken between 1985 and 1986 by him and his friends, in what can be considered a direct reaction to the Polish anti-gay militia campaign during the 1980’s.

After the screening, Radziszewski will participate in a talk with the public about the film and present his Queer Archives Institute, which recently opened at Galpão VB as part of the Videobrasil Collection in Context #2 exhibition. Karol Radziszewski is one of the invited artists of Videobrasil in Context. The project is bred by the partnership between Videobrasil, the A-I-R Laboratory curatorial artist residency program, run by the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, as part of a program to promote Polish culture in Brazil, organized by Culture.pl in 2016.

Currently in residence at Galpão VB, Radziszewski is working on producing a new film commissioned by the project. Before finalizing it, the artist currently participates in the exhibition Videobrasil Collection in Context #2, materializing the project of his Queer Archives Institute (QAI), which opened last April 02.

The QAI is an artistic project created by Radziszewski and dedicated to collecting archival materials, mostly visual, and recording interviews and audiovisual footage in order to preserve the queer memory from Eastern European and, now, Latin American countries. For the exhibition at Galpão VB, the artist includes in the QAI materials that allow a brief reconstitution of the history of the presence of gay, lesbian and transgender people in Brazil. Radziszewski drew from the Festival’s Collection three pieces that deal with gender and sexuality issues, establishing a rich dialogue with the QAI. The exhibition features videos by Rita Moreira (Temporada de caça, 1988), Rafael França (O profundo silêncio das coisas mortas, 1988) and Virginia de Medeiros (Sergio e Simone, 2010). 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Karol Radziszewski (Bialystok, Poland, 1980)

A multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and curator, Karol Radziszewski completed a master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in 2004. Employing an archive-based methodology, he weaves together multiple cultural, historical, religious, social and gender references. Radziszewski is the editor-in-chief of DIK Fagazine, a magazine that combines research on queer archives and contemporary art contributions. He is also the founder of the Queer Archives Institute. His work has been shown at the National Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Zacheta National Gallery (Warsaw, Poland); the Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna, Austria); the New Museum (New York); the Cobra Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands); the Wroclaw Contemporary Art Museum (Poland), and the MuzeumSztuki in Lodz (Poland). He has also exhibited at international biennials including the PERFORMA 13 (New York); the 7th Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (Sweden); the 4th Prague Biennale (Czech Republic) and the 15th WRO Media Art Biennale (Wroclaw). Karol Radziszewski lives and works in Warsaw.
