JAMAC, Mackwacha to sit for a talk
On September 17 (Saturday), from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at #GalpãoVB, Congolese photographer Georges Senga Assani and Brazilian visual artist Mônica Nador, founder of JAMAC - Jardim Miriam Arte Clube, will sit down to discuss implementing an artist residency program in Mackwacha village, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Georges Senga Assani will go over his experience as head of project implementation in Mackwacha, a site lacking even the most basic infrastructure. He and Mônica Nador will discuss having JAMAC collaborate with the initiative. The organization is an art and culture facility offering courses and workshops out of Jardim Miriam, in São Paulo’s South Side.
ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS
Georges Senga Assani (born in 1983 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo / Lubumbashi), photographer, discovered during the first edition of Rencontres Picha: Lubumbashi Biennale by Marie-Françoise Plissart and Sammy Baloji. He joined the Master Class workshop organized by Johannesburg’s Goethe Institut in Bamako, 2011, in Lubumbashi, 2012, and in Lagos, 2013. His work was shown at the 2013 Lubumbashi Biennale and in 2014 at the Kampala Art Biennale, the Addis Foto Fest, and the Mu.ZEE in Ostend. Also in 2014, Assani won a scholarship from PROHELVELTIA, in Zimbabwe, to work on his photo project “TRANSIT.” In 2015, he won his first residency in Belgium, at the Wiels art center.
Mônica Nador is a visual artist with a fine arts degree from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado - FAAP, São Paulo, in 1983. Her earliest work dates from the 1980s. She earned a master’s degree from ECA/USP for her paper "Paredes Pinturas" (Walls Paintings), under the supervision of Regina Silveira. In 2004, Mônica Nador founded JAMAC (Jardim Miriam Arte Clube), in São Paulo’s Jardim Miriam district, where she lives. Major exhibitions include the 1993 São Paulo Art Biennial; the 2006 São Paulo Art Biennial; the 2000 Havana Biennial, in Cuba; the 2004 Biennale of Sydney, in Australia; the 2012 Guangzhou Biennial, in Korea; and the 2015 Lubumbashi Biennale.
