Politics in Art: Investigation, Activism, and Contemporary Poetics
The course Politics in Art: Investigation, Activism, and Contemporary Poetics will debate current issues that permeate the relationship between art and activism from a practical perspective linked to the repertoires of contemporary Brazilian artists.
With thematic meetings conducted by artists, the course, jointly coordinated by Galpão VB’s collection, research, and curator teams, is targeted at researchers, curators, educators, artists, producers, students, and all those interested in deepening their knowledge on contemporary artistic practices.

February 20 | Deyson Gilbert
Graduated in Fine Arts from ECA-USP, he was a member of the Criticism and Curatorship Study Group, supervised by Tadeu Chiarelli. In his work, the artist retraces points of tension of the collective social imagery, combining elements collected from the everyday life. He has taken part in exhibitions at Centro Universitário Maria Antônia (2004) and Centro Cultural São Paulo (2007 and 2010). Also in São Paulo, he participated as an artist and curator of the exhibition À Sombra do Futuro, Instituto Cervantes (2010). In 2008, he received a research grant at the 47th Salão de Artes Plásticas de Pernambuco.
February 22 | Bruno Moreschi
With a master’s and a PhD in Visual Arts from Unicamp, Moreschi holds a Communication degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. His research addresses the system of the visual arts, especially the spaces of art legitimation. He has exhibited at the Montevideo Biennial (Uruguay); and Frestas – Arts Triennial (Sorocaba); He was the recipient of the Funarte Award for Contemporary Art and the Funarte Fellowship for the Promotion of Visual Arts (2013), and was selected by the Rumos Itaú Cultural project (2016).
February 27 | Gui Mohallem
Graduated in Film and Video from ECA-USP, his photographs stem from experiences and immersions in contexts of exception, addressing themes such as abandonment and belonging. He participated in the Crossing Point Residency Program, Beirut (2012); Photoespaña’s Descubrimientos program, Madrid (2011); and Paraty em Foco (2009 and 2011). He has held solo exhibitions at the Rabbithole Studio, New York (2008) and the Emma Thomas Gallery, São Paulo (2008). He took second place at the Conrad Wessel Award (2011).
March 1 | Jaime Lauriano
With a degree in Arts from Centro Universitário Belas Artes, São Paulo, his work brings up historical traumas relegated to the past and to confined archives, proposing to collectively review and rework history. He was awarded the O.F.F. – Ostrovsky Family Fund award at the 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil. He has exhibited at the 10th Bamako Encounters (2015); Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (2015); and the 2nd Biennale of Young Art, Moscow (2010). His works are part of the collections of Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and Museu de Arte do Rio.
March 6 | Dora Longo Bahia
With a master’s and a PhD in Visual Poetics from ECA-USP, she is a multimedia artist, with a production that includes set design, illustration, painting, engraving, and performance. Since 2013 she is a professor at ECA-USP. In 2016 she premiered the film Caso Dora, her first work in cinema. Among her leading solo shows are Escalpo Carioca (2011) and Trash Metal (2010), both at Galeria Vermelho, São Paulo. Among her collective exhibitions are Arti et Armiticiae, at FLAM III (2012); Los Matices Del Por Qué, at Museo de los Metales, Cuenca, (2011); and MDE11, at Museo de Antioquia, Medellin (2011).
March 8 | Monica Nador
With a master’s degree from ECA-USP, she holds a degree in Fine Arts from FAAP. As of 1999, she focused on the production of large mural paintings in poor neighborhoods, developing paintings on façades of residences together with their residents. In 2004 she founded JAMAC(Jardim Miriam Arte Clube), a non-profit association formed by artists and residents of the Jardim Miriam neighborhood, a southern district of São Paulo. She participated in the biennials of Lubumbashi (2015), Gwangju (2012), São Paulo (1993 and 2006), and Havana (2000).
March 13 | Mídia NINJA!
Founded in 2013 Mídia NINJA! is a free communication network that gained notoriety during Brazil’s June 2013 street demonstrations. Conducting live coverage of the protests, it sought new forms of production and distribution of information making use of new technologies and a collaborative work logic. In 2013 Mídia NINJA! won the Shorty Awards, a global award given to social media initiatives. The talk will be conducted by the columnist Dríade Aguiar, Mídia NINJA!’s social networks manager and a Fora do Eixo activist, black feminist, pansexual, and body-positive militant.
March 15 | Virginia de Medeiros
In her artistic practice, based mainly on the use of video and installation, the artist appropriates documentary strategies to shed a new light on the ways of interpreting the other, borrowing forms of anthropological and ethnographic research. She has participated in the São Paulo Biennial (2006 and 2014); the 32nd Panorama da Arte Brasileira at Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (2011); and the 2nd Luanda Triennial (2010), among other shows. Medeiros was granted, in 2009, the Rede Nacional Funarte Artes Visuais Award.
March 20 | Amilcar Packer
Graduated in Philosophy from FFLCH-USP, Packer develops a practice in which he shifts, subverts and recontextualizes everyday objects, architecture and the human body in photographs, videos and installations. He was selected by Rumos Artes Visuais Itaú Cultural (2002). He was granted the Acquisition Prize of the 11th Salão da Bahia, at Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia (2004); and the CIFO Award, from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Miami, 2007). Among his main exhibitions, we point out: Polissemiose, at CCBB-SP (2006); the 14th Sydney Biennial (2004); and Panorama ‘99, at Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (1999).
March 22 | Maurinete Lima
With a master’s degree from the University of São Paulo, Lima is a sociologist, poet, activist, and retired professor from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Founder of Frente 3 de Fevereiro, she is active in the intersectional feminist movement. She took third place at the National Championship of Spoken Poetry at the 2016 Festa Literária das Periferias (FLUPP) and was granted the Carolina Maria de Jesus award. In 2017 she participated in the show SLAM! Eu, Tu, Nós, VOZ!, at Encontro Estéticas das Periferias; in the film SLAM: Voz de Levante, awarded at Festival do Rio; and in two meetings of the Agora Somos Todxs Negrxs? exhibition, at Galpão VB, in São Paulo.
