Performance is the common thread to the essays in Caderno Videobrasil’s first edition, released during the 15th Videobrasil International Electronic Art Festival, in September 2005. Edited by José Augusto Ribeiro, this volume presents an alternative to the official history of the genre, spanning from Brazilian modernism to current art projects in Latin America and the Middle East.

A performance action may result in dancing, theatre, music performance, or the reading of a text. Its outcome may be a painting, a video, a photograph, a film projection, and it can combine elements from one, two, or all of the languages above. Such interdisciplinary nature is accompanied by operations that attribute meaning. The magazine tackles this complexity by way of reflections that originate from the visual arts, a field of activity that is also fond of creations developed at the boundary between different expressions.
