The Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil has a pioneering role in promoting international artistic exchanges. At each edition, the Festival awards residency grants in partner institutions around the world.

The initiative began in the seventh edition of the Festival, in 1989, when the artist Sandra Kogut was grant with the residency award to conduct her research at the Centre Internationale de Vidéo Création (CICV), in France. This exchange allowed her to develop Parabolic People – a referential video artwork in Brazil and worldwide. At that moment, this exchange and research model, through art residency, was not widely known and Videobrasil played a key role in its implementation.

Since 1990, thanks to partnerships signed from the internationalization of the Festival in 1989, Videobrasil started to grant artistic residency awards on a regular basis. A decade later, this format is consolidated with the establishment of a dynamic and rotating network of partners. So far, 39 artists benefited from the residencies granted by the institution.
